EXECUTION · Chapter 4
SEO, GEO, and AEO are three disciplines on one foundation.
Three acronyms, one body of work. SEO ranks the page, AEO wins the snippet, GEO earns the citation. The technical foundation and the editorial discipline are shared. What changes is how you structure each passage.
How the three compare
Built as a side-by-side so the trade-offs are obvious. Read across the row for the discipline-level differences; read down the column for the strategy of one surface.
| Dimension | SEO | GEO | AEO |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surface | Google and Bing organic results pages. | Generative answers in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, and Google AI Overviews. | Featured snippets, People Also Ask, Knowledge Panels, and rich results inside traditional SERPs. |
| Unit of competition | The page (URL). | The passage (a self-contained answer block). | The answer slot (one quote-shaped paragraph or list). |
| Win condition | Rank in the top organic positions. | Get cited by name with a working link. | Get lifted verbatim into a snippet, PAA, or panel. |
| Primary signals | Backlinks, on-page relevance, technical health, intent match. | Passage clarity, entity authority, freshness, schema, mention co-occurrence with the topic. | Question phrasing in H2/H3, list and table structure, FAQ schema, decisive opening sentences. |
| How you verify | Google Search Console, rank trackers. | Prompt testing across 4+ engines, brand-mention monitoring, referral logs (chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai). | SERP scraping for the target query, GSC position 1–3 with low CTR (snippet stealing clicks). |
The AI crawler split
Training bots and retrieval bots are different organisms. Blocking training does not block citations. The rule of thumb: allow retrieval everywhere, decide on training per business.
| Bot | Purpose | Recommended | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| GPTBot | Trains OpenAI models on web content. | Decide | Blocking removes the page from future training data but does not affect ChatGPT Search citations. Most clients block until a content-licensing conversation is on the table. |
| OAI-SearchBot | Powers ChatGPT Search retrieval and citations. | Allow | Allowing is the prerequisite for being cited inside a ChatGPT answer. |
| ClaudeBot | Trains Anthropic models. | Decide | Same logic as GPTBot. Block-by-default if training data licensing matters. |
| Claude-SearchBot | Powers Claude web search and citations. | Allow | Required for Claude to cite the site inside answers. |
| PerplexityBot | Retrieves pages Perplexity quotes inside answers. | Allow | Perplexity is one of the highest-converting AI referral sources for B2B SMBs today. |
| Googlebot | Crawls for Google Search, Discover, and AI Overviews. | Allow | Non-negotiable. Blocking Googlebot also takes the site out of AI Overviews. |
| Bingbot | Crawls for Bing, ChatGPT Search backfill, and Copilot. | Allow | Bing's index is the substrate for several AI surfaces, including ChatGPT Search and DuckDuckGo. |
- Businesses that already rank for at least a few branded and long-tail terms and want to extend reach into AI surfaces.
- Teams whose ICP uses ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Claude for research before a buying decision.
- Content programs that publish weekly and can adopt passage-shaped writing as a default.
- The site has no organic baseline. AI citation builds on top of SEO. It does not replace the foundation.
- Content is paywalled or behind login. AI engines cannot quote what they cannot retrieve.
- Pages have no schema, no internal linking, and no author byline. AI engines fall back to higher-trust sources.
- Schema is valid in the Rich Results Test for every priority template.
- robots.txt and llms.txt are accessible and explicit about which AI bots are allowed.
- A prompt test across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Copilot returns at least one citation to the site for a known branded query.
Implementation effort by discipline
Every task below contributes to at least one of the three disciplines. The effort and impact columns reflect what José observes across SMB implementations — not theoretical benchmarks.
| Task | Discipline | Effort | Impact | Prerequisite |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fix title tags + meta descriptions for AEO snippets | AEO | Low | High — fast SERP feature wins | Existing page ranking positions 5–15 |
| Add FAQPage schema to key pages (AI citation only — no SERP rich result post-May 2026) | AEO / GEO | Low | Medium — AI citation lift for ChatGPT/Perplexity/AIO; HowTo rich results deprecated Sep 2023 | Visible FAQ content on page |
| Rewrite opening paragraphs (passage discipline) | GEO | Medium | High — Perplexity citation share | Existing published pages |
| Build AI crawler split in robots.txt | GEO | Low | Medium — prerequisite for all AI citations | Access to robots.txt |
| Ship Person + Organization schema with sameAs | GEO | Low | High — ChatGPT entity-graph grounding | Wikidata or LinkedIn presence |
| Create pillar page with table-driven structure | GEO / SEO | High | High — Claude depth reward, SEO authority | Content strategy + hub architecture |
| Build Wikidata entity + Wikipedia stub (if notable) | GEO | High | Very high — ChatGPT trust anchor | Established brand with third-party mentions |
| Run query fan-out audit on top 10 pages | GEO / AEO | Medium | High — identifies missing sub-queries | Access to GSC + target keyword list |
The verdict
For most B2B SMBs in 2026, the right sequence is SEO foundation first, then AEO on the pages already ranking in positions 5–20, then GEO as the schema and entity-graph work compounds into AI citation share. The three disciplines do not compete for budget — they compound each other.
Frequently asked
What is the difference between SEO, GEO, and AEO?
+
SEO is Search Engine Optimization: getting pages to rank in Google and Bing organic results. GEO is Generative Engine Optimization: getting cited inside answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. AEO is Answer Engine Optimization: getting lifted into featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, and Knowledge Panels in traditional SERPs. The three disciplines share a foundation but optimize for different surfaces.
Do SEO, GEO, and AEO require separate budgets?
+
No. For most 5 to 50 person SMBs, the existing SEO budget is redirected, not duplicated. Adding GEO and AEO requires schema work, llms.txt, an AI crawler split in robots.txt, and a passage-shaped writing discipline. The incremental tooling cost is measured in dozens of dollars per month, not thousands.
Should I block GPTBot and ClaudeBot?
+
Blocking the training bots (GPTBot, ClaudeBot) keeps content out of future model training but does not affect AI citations. Allowing the retrieval bots (OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot) is the prerequisite for being cited inside answers. Most SMBs allow retrieval and block training until a content-licensing conversation is on the table.
Is llms.txt worth shipping?
+
llms.txt is a markdown file at the root of a domain that summarizes a site for AI assistants. No major AI provider has committed to honor it as of 2026, but the cost is one file. The asymmetric upside makes it a reasonable infrastructure bet for any business that publishes content.
How do I know if I am getting cited by AI engines?
+
Run prompt tests across the four major engines monthly using your priority queries. Monitor referral logs for chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, claude.ai, gemini.google.com, and copilot.microsoft.com. Brand-mention monitoring services now track AI citations directly. If the four engines do not return a citation to your site for a query you should win, the page is not passage-shaped enough.
Does Featured Snippet eligibility overlap with GEO eligibility?
+
Largely, yes. The same passage discipline (a direct answer in the first sentence, a clear question-shaped heading, a self-contained paragraph) earns both a Featured Snippet in classical Google results and a citation inside AI Overviews or ChatGPT. Writing for AEO and GEO at the same time is efficient because the underlying page structure is nearly identical.
Do I need a different writer for AEO content versus GEO content?
+
No. One writer producing passage-shaped, question-led content serves both. The difference between AEO and GEO is which surface consumes the content, not how it is written. Trying to run separate content tracks for each surface duplicates effort for a distinction that does not exist at the page-writing level.
What is the single technical checklist item that unlocks all three disciplines at once?
+
A clean, indexable page that returns real HTML on first server response. SEO needs it for Googlebot to rank the page, AEO needs it for Featured Snippet extraction, and GEO needs it for the AI retrieval bots that fetch live and often have tighter timeouts than Googlebot. A page failing this one check underperforms on all three at once.
