Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring a website so that AI engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, and Google AI Overviews — cite its pages as sources inside their answers. The shared foundation
Before any GEO-specific work pays back, six classical fundamentals have to be in place. If they are not, no amount of passage engineering or llms.txt will move citation share.
- Crawlability. Pages return real HTML on first response. JavaScript-rendered content is a coin flip with most AI crawlers — assume it will not be read.
- Indexability in Google and Bing. AIO grounds on Google. Copilot grounds on Bing. Most other engines pull from both. A noindex tag eliminates the page from every downstream AI surface.
- HTTPS, canonical URLs, and a clean sitemap. Boring hygiene that nonetheless decides whether a page is ever seen.
- Article + Person + Organization schema. The entity layer AI engines use to attribute a citation cleanly.
- Internal links with descriptive anchor text. Both Google and AI engines weight in-domain navigation when composing an answer from multiple passages.
- Substantive, original content. A model will not cite a page that has nothing it cannot derive from another source.
Where GEO adds new work on top
GEO adds four disciplines on top of SEO: passage discipline (each H2 answers a specific question in 40–80 self-contained words), entity graph work (Author and Organization schema with sameAs links to Wikipedia, Wikidata, and LinkedIn), crawler access decisions (allowing retrieval bots, deciding on training bots), and per-platform tactics tuned to each AI engine.
- Passage discipline. The lead paragraph and each H2 should answer a specific question in 40 to 80 words. A model quoting the page should be able to lift any of them without losing meaning.
- Entity graph. Author and brand identity tied together via schema and sameAs links to Wikipedia, Wikidata, LinkedIn, and authoritative third-party profiles. AI engines weight entity clarity heavily when deciding which source to cite.
