Search for the best fractional CMO in Vancouver and you get directories that charge for placement and lists written by the firms on them. None of that helps, because best in this category is entirely dependent on your company. What follows is the criteria set I would use if I were hiring one, written knowing full well that I am one of the options.
Eight criteria that predict a good engagement
1. They have led marketing at your size. This is the single strongest predictor. Running a department of twenty with a $3M budget teaches skills that actively mislead at a 30 person company with one coordinator and $15K a month. Ask what the smallest team they have run was.
2. Your sales motion matches their experience. A six-month enterprise cycle with a buying committee and a two-week transactional sale need different marketing entirely. Logos matter less than motion.
3. Positioning comes before channels. Read their proposal. If the first phase is audit, interviews and positioning, they understand the job. If it opens with a channel mix and a content calendar, you are buying tactics with a leadership price tag.
4. They name who executes. Before signing, get in writing who builds the pages, writes the content and runs the campaigns, and what that costs. The most common failure in this category is a good plan with nobody to deliver it.
5. Reporting leads with pipeline. Ask to see a sample monthly report. If the first page is traffic and impressions, you will not be able to judge the engagement at month six.
6. They cap their client count. Ask how many companies they work with. Leadership at a small company takes roughly a day a week. Someone carrying eight clients is doing advisory work regardless of the title on the contract.
7. They can name who they turn away. A specific answer means they know their lane. Anyone who says they can help any business is telling you they have no lane.
8. Two references, by phone, before contract. Similar size, similar sales motion. Ask what the first 90 days produced and what the person does badly.
What it should cost
In Vancouver in 2026, expect $3,000 to $8,000 CAD per month depending on days committed and seniority, usually with a one-time onboarding fee of $2,000 to $5,000 covering the audit and plan. Below $2,500 a month you are generally buying a few hours of advice rather than someone who owns outcomes. Above $8,000, compare honestly against a full-time marketing director at $130K to $160K plus benefits, which becomes the better deal once you need someone present every day.
Does local matter
It matters when your buyers are in this business community, when you want leadership sessions in the room rather than on a call, or when you need someone who knows the local agency and freelance pool well enough to staff execution quickly. It matters less for purely digital work. One check worth running: ask where their team actually sits. A number of providers ranking for Vancouver terms have no presence here, which is fine if you do not need local, and misleading if you do.
Red flags
Guaranteed lead volumes. Nobody can guarantee that in B2B, and the ones who do are selling to people who will not check. No references, or references who cannot describe specifics. Proposals with no positioning phase. Twelve-month lock-ins with no exit after the initial term. Unwillingness to say which parts of the work they will not do themselves. And the subtle one: an engagement that never produces tension. If nobody has pushed back on your assumptions by month two, you are paying for company.
A sane selection process
Write down your three biggest marketing problems in one page before you talk to anyone. Speak to three providers and give each the same page. Compare the diagnosis, not the deck. Call two references each. Then pick on fit and directness rather than polish, and hold contract terms that protect you: three months minimum, six to twelve to judge, 30-day exit after the initial term, full ownership of every account and asset from day one.
If you want to compare specific Vancouver providers by name, that is in the Vancouver fractional CMO comparison. My own engagement details and pricing are on the fractional CMO page, and the Growth Readiness Assessment will tell you whether leadership is the gap before you start interviewing.
